Ion Exchange Membrane (IEM)

High Perm-Selectivity

Low Electrical Resistance

Acid and Base Resistant

Ion-exchange membrane is a type of semi-permeable membranes where only certain dissolved ions can transport through, while other ions or neutral molecules will be blocked due to Donnan equilibrium, i.e., cation-exchange membranes (CEM) only transport cations and anion-exchange membranes (AEM) only transport anions.

FUTURON provides ion exchange membranes in two different grades, to suit customers’ needs ranging from low electrical resistance membranes to high perm-selectivity membranes. Within each grade, we can further tailor the membrane for the specific applications.

① The thickness of Futuron membranes can be adjusted to suit specific applications. Other properties may be affected when the thickness is adjusted.

② Perm-selectivity measured at 0.1-0.2 M KCl solution at 25°C

③ Electrical resistance measured in 0.1 M NaCl solution at 25°C

④ Tested for >2000 hours in 6 M NaOH solution and in 6 M HCL solution at 25°C. Loss of burst strength <10%

ElectroDialysis (ED)

ElectroDialysis (ED) is an electrochemical separation process where ions are transferred through selective ion exchange membranes (IEM) from one solution to another by means of a DC voltage.

As an example, the electrical potential can be used to move salt through IEM, leaving desalinated water as product. Most salts (e.g. NaCl) are dissolved in water as ions, either positively charged (cations, e.g. Na+), or negatively charged (anions, e.g. Cl-). The electrical potential drives ions towards electrodes with opposite charges, while IEM only permits selective passage of either anion or cations.

Membranes are usually arranged in an alternate pattern. In a desalination process, concentrated and diluted solutions are created in the spaces between the alternating membranes, and these spaces bound by two membranes are called cells.
